OCD consists of obsessive, intrusive thoughts, and compulsive behaviours or rituals that sufferers use to try and cope with the thoughts.
Obsessive thoughts in OCD are often about contamination, harm occurring to others, or socially unacceptable behaviour. These thoughts cause anxiety, which is temporarily relieved by carrying out rituals such as repeated handwashing, checking, or counting. Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours can become so frequent that they end up dominating your life, and also perhaps the lives of those around you.
Psychological therapy can be effective in treating OCD, by teaching you to let go of obsessive rituals and see that intrusive thoughts are just thoughts.
