In PTSD, a person who has suffered or witnessed a life-threatening event is troubled by very vivid memories of the event. You may have nightmares about it, and even flashbacks - episodes in which you lose touch with reality and feel as though the terrifying event is happening in the present. You may start to avoid anything that could remind you of the event, which can stop you doing your usual activities, and you might feel upset and anxious much of the time.
In psychological therapy for PTSD, you will learn how to re-engage with your life, and to turn the vivid memory of the traumatic event into an ordinary memory that no longer has any power over you.
