A panic attack happens when something triggers the physical symptoms of anxiety - e.g. rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, sweating - and you misinterpret these as signs that you are on the brink of a physical catastrophe such as a heart attack, or of losing control of yourself. That misinterpretation causes more anxiety, which makes the symptoms worse, and so a vicious cycle begins.
Panic attacks can be caused by any anxiety (even the fear of having a panic attack) and sufferers may begin avoding anything that could make them feel anxious. This can dramatically restrict their daily activities.
Panic attacks can be treated very well with psychological therapy. You will learn to recognise your symptoms of anxiety for what they are, stop avoiding situations that make you nervous, and reclaim your life.
